Lower Energy Bills

From 1 April 2026, the Government and energy regulator Ofgem confirm that the energy price cap will fall, meaning typical households will pay less overall for gas and electricity annually — around £150‑£200 less on average.

If you’re on a standard variable tariff (65% of homes are) then this change is automatic and will help you reduce one of your biggest monthly outgoings — energy bills — without having to change tariff or provider.

Minimum Wage Increase

Again, from April 2026, the minimum wage rates in the UK will go up. The changes are summarised below and you can find further information here

NMW rate from April 2026 Increase (£) Increase (%)
National Living Wage (21 and over) £12.71 50p 4.1
18-20 Year Old Rate £10.85 85p 8.5

Universal Credit Updates

From April 2026, Universal Credit (UC) standard allowance rates are increasing — meaning most claimants will receive more money each month. Additionally, the two‑child limit will be removed, so families with three or more children could receive extra support.

Remember, applications can take some time, so the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll know if you’re able to get additional support.

Summary

With so many changes coming up in terms of potential financial help and legal reforms, staying informed and being proactive can make a real difference to your household budget this year.
